Anthropic

August 10, 2026, (Inside AI) — Microsoft is preparing to publicly unveil its new Maia 300 AI chip as soon as September, according to a report from The Information citing people with direct knowledge of the plans. The launch marks a critical escalation in the company's effort to reduce dependence on Nvidia's costly GPUs for artificial intelligence workloads.
The Maia 300 is the successor to the original Maia chip introduced in November 2023. That first-generation silicon was designed for large language model training and inference, but Microsoft's ramp-up has been slow compared to internal targets and competitor timelines. The new chip aims to close that gap.
Microsoft has already engaged Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to secure capacity for more than 300,000 units of the Maia 300, with deliveries expected in 2027, the report said. The scale of the order signals a long-term commitment to custom silicon that could shift the balance of power in cloud AI infrastructure.
The company is also working to persuade major cloud customers, including Anthropic, to adopt the Maia 300 for their AI workloads. Success there would validate the chip beyond Microsoft's own services like Azure OpenAI and Copilot, potentially creating a viable third ecosystem alongside Nvidia CUDA and Google TPUs.
Maia 300 Aims to Close the Custom Silicon Gap
Microsoft's custom chip journey has been deliberate but measured. The original Maia chip, built on a 5-nanometer process, featured 105 billion transistors and was optimized for Microsoft's own AI infrastructure. Yet production volumes remained limited, and the chip never became a public-facing product.
Competitors moved faster. Google's TPU v5p is already in broad cloud availability, and Amazon's Trainium2 is ramping for large-scale training. Microsoft's decision to unveil the Maia 300 now, with a massive TSMC order behind it, suggests the company believes it has a design that can compete on performance and cost.
Industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy noted that Microsoft's approach differs from Amazon and Google. "Microsoft has been more cautious, integrating Maia deeply into Azure's fabric before exposing it broadly. The Maia 300 could be the moment that changes," he said in a recent interview.
Anthropic Adoption Would Signal Market Shift
Anthropic's potential adoption is particularly significant. The AI startup is a major Nvidia customer and operates the Claude family of models. If it moves some workloads to Maia 300, it would represent one of the first large-scale defections from Nvidia's dominant AI training platform.
However, such a transition is not trivial. Nvidia's CUDA software stack remains deeply entrenched, and porting models to a new architecture requires significant engineering effort. Microsoft will need to demonstrate not just hardware performance but a mature software ecosystem to win over skeptical developers.
The Maia 300 is expected to integrate with Microsoft's Azure AI infrastructure and support popular frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow. Early benchmarks have not been disclosed, but the chip is rumored to target both training and inference with a focus on efficiency for large transformer models.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. TSMC could not be reached for comment outside regular business hours.
The push into custom silicon comes as global AI chip demand continues to outstrip supply. Nvidia's H100 and upcoming B100 GPUs face extended lead times, and cloud providers are increasingly looking to in-house designs to control costs and availability. Microsoft's Maia 300 is the latest salvo in that escalating arms race.
