2 Min ReadClaude users who want to use the open source OpenClaw agent framework using their subscriptions will no longer be able to do so unless they are willing to pay much more.That’s the key effect of a new measure introduced by Claude developer Anthropic.The change in policy, made public by the creator of Claude Code, Boris Cherny, on X and in an email to subscribers, took effect on April 4.“Claude subscriptions will no longer cover usage on third-party tools like OpenClaw. You can still use these tools with your Claude login via extra usage bundles (now available at a discount), or with a Claude API key,” Cherny posted.Cherny went on to explain the rationale for the dramatic policy change.“We’ve been working hard to meet the increase in demand for Claude, and our subscriptions weren’t built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools. However, a number of users swiftly posted on social media that they were unable to claim their refund.As Cherny detailed, Claude’s models will still be able to power OpenClaw -- and other external agents, for that matter.But now that means having to opt in to a pay-as-you-go extra usage bundle, which although offering a saving of up to 30% on standard extra usage rates, is likely to send costs soaring for many.Alternatively, they can use Anthropic’s API, which charges for every token of usage rather than charging up to specific limits, as was the case previously with the Claude Pro and Claude Max plans, for example.For some developers who have used their Claude subscriptions to build operations around OpenClaw, this route could mean increased daily costs of thousands of dollars -- unsustainable for many.Anthropic’s decision attracted some pushback, with OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger, who is now with OpenAI, claiming that he had “tried to talk sense into Anthropic” but had only managed to delay the move by a week.
