ORLANDO -- For Amy Lenander, chief data officer at Capital One, constructing a strong data foundation is the best way to ensure the success of AI systems.Given that the tech is still young, Lenander has discovered that employees who are creative and nimble are best positioned to help the giant bank holding company harness the flood of new AI tools."I'm thinking a lot about people who have great curiosity and learning agility because things are changing so fast right now," Lenander said on the latest podcast episode of Targeting AI, which was recorded onsite at the Gartner Data & Analytics Summit. "Hiring for people who have expertise of particular data or systems of the past is helpful, but sort of insufficient for what we need in the future.""That said, there isn't anybody around who has years and years of experience with agentic coding assistants, because those have only just come on the scene," she continued. "So, what we've really focused on is how do we get the people who are really curious, really great problem solvers, collaborative and work well with people and understand what our businesses really need."Related:Adobe Launches AI Agent Platform for CXThese are the employees who are building the AI-ready data ecosystems that Lenander maintains are critical to the agentic and generative AI systems Capital One is putting into action.Lenander defines this kind of data ecosystem as well-governed and managed, and, importantly, easy to use."AI is fundamentally using data to do everything it does," she said. "So, we need our data to be trusted, and that's the foundation that we're building into the data ecosystem.""We're also seeing that some of our newest grads … they've had the most AI-native experience in their universities. That's really helpful to us. Overall, the trend that I see with AI is that it's going to automate away more of the tasks that are probably not the most fun part of people's jobs today. And that's going to allow employees to focus on the most creative problem-solving tasks, whether that's in analysis or coding, building data platforms or governing data."About the AuthorsSenior News Director, AI BusinessShaun Sutner, a journalist with more than 25 years of daily newspaper experience and 11 years at Informa TechTarget as an editor and writer, directs news coverage for AI Business.
