2 Min ReadBoston Dynamics entered into a partnership with Google Cloud and its AI research lab, DeepMind, to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its robots. The collaboration will see Google's Gemini models embedded into Boston Dynamics' robot dog, Spot, and the AI visual inspections (AIVI) arm of its robot fleet management platform, Orbit. At the center of the integration is Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6, a robot-specific reasoning model that was released on April 14. DeepMind said the upgraded model improves robots' spatial understanding and reasoning, acting as a high-level "brain" that enables them to interpret and respond to complex environments with greater precision."This is a significant upgrade to our reasoning-first model," DeepMind said in a blog post. "By enhancing spatial reasoning and multi-view understanding, we are bringing a new level of autonomy to the next generation of physical agents."Related:The Real AI Shift Isn’t New Models. It’s Control. In its blog post on the deal, Boston Dynamics said the integration will enhance Spot and Orbit's visual inspection capabilities, enabling more in-depth and precise asset monitoring."Industrial environments are incredibly complex, and the assets you manage require more than just basic object recognition," according to the post. "Gemini understands complex concepts right out of the gate, enabling us to roll out new advanced capabilities instantly."With the addition of Gemini, Spot and Orbit AIVI will also be able to continuously learn from their environments, enabling more autonomous decision-making over time. The partnership is not the first collaboration between the companies. In January, Boston Dynamics said it would use Gemini models to enhance the capabilities of its Atlas humanoid robot, improving its intelligence and usability. In a statement released at the time, Carolina Parada, senior director of robotics at DeepMind, said the collaboration comes as DeepMind looks to more firmly enter the realm of robotics."We developed our Gemini Robotics models to bring AI into the physical world," she said. "We are excited to begin working with the Boston Dynamics team … as we develop new models to expand the impact of robotics, and to scale robots safely and efficiently."About the AuthorContributing WriterScarlett Evans is a freelance writer with a focus on emerging technologies and the minerals industry.
