ZDNET*

ZDNET's key takeaways
- AI can make decent flyers, but most still aren't great.
- Clear prompts and limits can produce much better AI flyers.
- A designer is best, but these tips work when that's not an option.
AI flyers are interesting. I personally don't love them, and I can instantly spot one. Too much text. Clashing fonts. Imagery that's meant to look realistic but is somehow off. When one pops up on Facebook, where I see them most often, I usually send it to my husband so we can mourn another person or small business that needs to be freed from the grip of unchecked AI design.
Most people aren't graphic designers. They may lack experience with Photoshop or Illustrator, or even more user-friendly tools such as Canva, and hiring a professional is not always possible or within the budget for events such as a school fundraiser, community gathering, or high school reunion. Naturally, people are turning to AI to whip something up quickly and cheaply.
Also: How to spot an AI image: 6 telltale signs it's fake - and my go-to free detectors
For example, a friend recently shared a flyer for our high school reunion. I thought it looked surprisingly decent, but because I know she doesn't use design tools, I figured it was made by AI. Then I spotted the "AI-generated content" label in the corner.
Still, her flyer gets several things right. The imagery and black-and-green palette are consistent with our school colors and logo; the event is immediately recognizable; and the date and details are accurate. It has classic AI problems, though. It's far too busy with all the shamrocks, there are several competing typefaces, and the information is cramped, with hard-to-read script.

Even so, I don't hate it. It shows how AI has become better at handling text and layouts. I suspect prompting makes all the difference. So, as someone with design experience who also tests AI tools regularly for work, I decided to use AI to make my own flyer. After a bit of trial and error, here are my best tips and prompt suggestions for creating one that doesn't scream AI.
1. Get feedback from a graphic designer
Sorry, but I have to start with my strongest advice: If possible, please talk to a graphic designer.
They truly know what they're doing and often aren't as expensive as people assume. At the very least, consider asking a designer friend for feedback on your initial concept, and offer to buy them coffee or lunch as a thank-you. They may suggest a starting point, review a draft, or identify problems that need to be fixed before you share the flyer everywhere.
Also: Adobe Express vs Canva: Which design tool is better?
I have a BA in journalism and an MFA in publishing, but I took several design courses in college and was the art director for my university's first print magazine. I'm not a designer by trade, but that experience helps me judge designs and offer useful advice.
Now imagine what someone with 20 years of skilled design experience could do. They bring originality, accessibility expertise, and a deep understanding of the medium that AI can't replace. If you don't know a graphic designer personally, check out Fiverr, where many professionals offer their services at affordable rates. I even hired a designer from there to mock up a renovation of my home.
*Perhaps hire a graphic designer on Fiverr. Fiverr/ ZDNET*
2. Decide the flyer's message
Before generating anything, figure out what the flyer needs to say and do. Reduce the message to one sentence. In my case, I'm creating a flyer for my 20-year high school reunion that tells my classmates when and where it's being held this summer.
Also: How to design killer Small Business Saturday ads for free with AI - and fast
Adobe has a list of common graphic design mistakes, and its first tip is to establish a "3-second message," then make sure the headline and main visual communicate it. Here's a starter to fine-tune: "This design is for __ and it should get people to __."
Once the message is hammered out, it can be used in a prompt.
3. Use a reference design
OK, hear me out. I'm not asking anyone to rip off someone else's design, but it helps to gather inspiration. Look at professional flyer designs you like, whether they appeared on Facebook, Etsy, or elsewhere online.
Upload an example to a favorite AI model, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, and ask it to describe the design, layout, and overall look. More specifically, have it analyze and summarize the color palette, spacing, mood, typography, and information hierarchy.
Also: The best AI image generators of 2026: There's only one clear winner now
That response can then become part of the prompts you eventually use. You can ask AI to create an original layout with many of those same characteristics, but I would avoid commands such as "copy this style exactly." Also, while it is technically possible to upload any art to an AI tool, doing so may raise copyright concerns or violate the platform's terms of service.
If you do not own the art, I suggest finding inspiration that's in the public domain or that you have permission to use. I also suggest using the Temporary Chat features in ChatGPT or Gemini, so the upload is not saved to your chat history or used to train a model.
4. Specify the format and impose limits
Now it's time to get into the details. Where will the flyer appear? Should it be a vertical 4:5 Facebook image or an 8.5-by-11-inch printed page? Make a decision, and then impose limits. For example, there should be one focal point, one or two typefaces max, consistent line spacing, two or three colors, generous margins and blank space, and limited effects such as shadows and outlines.
Also: My 3 favorite AI tools for voice dictation while vibe coding - and one is free
Canva's visual hierarchy guidance emphasizes spacing because blank space helps create balance and focus. In my friend's flyer, there do not need to be so many shamrocks. Yes, it's the school logo, but it needs room to breathe. Canva says spacing is one of the most neglected design principles and warns that failing to plan for blank space can result in a "jumbled, confusing" design.
No matter what information, text, and imagery appear on the flyer, a reader should know where to start looking, and the design shouldn't turn the reader away because it's impossible to navigate or understand at a glance.
5. Tell it to not look AI-generated
I'm serious. In the prompt, tell the AI model to create something that "doesn't look AI-generated." It really does help.
Also: Claude's Record-a-Skill cut my research from hours to 30 minutes - but the magic has limits
It works even better when the usual giveaways are named or described specifically: no glowing text, fake 3D lettering, excessive iconography, ornamental borders, random gradients, distorted objects, or decorative script for small details. Positive instructions are useful, too. Ask for a clean, minimal layout, flat colors, crisp typography, plenty of spacing, and a restrained design.
6. Supply original images and copy
Look at the flyer below. I recently saw it shared on Facebook and could tell it was AI-made because of how busy it was, but also because the imagery looked, well, AI-generated. To avoid this, upload original photography. Want a picture of a lake? Snap one and upload it, or use a public-domain photo. The Library of Congress has thousands of rights-free images ready to add to projects.
Want to use your high school's actual logo in a reunion flyer? Grab it and upload it.
Also: I tested ChatGPT Plus vs. Gemini Pro to see which is better - and if it's worth switching
Give each image upload a specific filename, then reference it in the prompt. For example, I could upload an image called "shamrock.jpg" and tell the AI to "use my school's logo, attached as shamrock.jpg, as the main visual focal point in the flyer."
Do the same with the copy. Always provide your own source material, and never let AI invent the details. Supply the date, time, messaging, and final wording in a clearly labeled block, and instruct the AI to reproduce it verbatim. Pay special attention to capitalization, punctuation, line breaks, and the desired order of information.
*An AI generated (presumably) flyer spotted on Facebook. AI generated / ZDNET*
7. Generate the art and type separately
I've found that one of the most reliable workflows is to have AI create the background, illustration, or overall concept without any text. Then, I simply add the final copy afterward in Canva, Affinity, Adobe Express, Figma, or another layout editor.
Also: You can use 70+ Adobe tools without leaving ChatGPT now - here's how
I know this isn't for everyone, but it keeps names, dates, addresses, and other details editable and sharp. It also prevents AI from having to redraw the entire flyer and potentially mess it up over a single text glitch. If you don't want to use an editor at all, perhaps you can generate the design in one thread and then start another where you upload the design and ask it to add your copy.
*Use a free tool like Canva to add text to your flyer separately. ZDNET*
8. Prompt away and keep iterating
OpenAI's image-prompting guidance recommends writing prompts in this order: "background or scene > subject > key details > constraints." For complex requests, break the prompt into "brief labeled sections or separate lines" rather than a single long paragraph.
Either way, I find that the first result is always a very rough draft. It usually takes many iterations and several follow-up prompts to get a final result worth sharing. Ask for less imagery, more blank space, a larger main visual, or a clearer call to action.
Also: I tested ChatGPT Images 2.0 vs. Gemini Nano Banana to see which is better - this model wins
I suggest changing only one or two variables per round. Once the design works, inspect every word, verify the details, and view the flyer on different devices. A layout that looks great in full-screen mode on a desktop may become unreadable on a phone.
Finally, have another human check it, ideally a graphic designer, as I suggested all the way back in tip No. 1.
